Summary of Book

A pioneering comprehensive study of African Politics with a deeper concentration on political and economic recession in post-independence Ghana between 1969 to early 1980s. She traces the gradual decline of power and authority from the state and documents the growth and revitalization of informal local structures as alternative productive mechanisms with regards to political leadership, political structures and institutions, ideology and political economy. The dynamics of state-society relations in the period in question is highlighted in the study as a time that was characterised with dissent, disengagement and conflict in Ghana and several other countries in Africa.
