School-based participatory health education for malaria control in Ghana: engaging children as health messengers

This study identified children as public health messengers in the control of malaria. The study was conducted in the Dangme- East district where teachers were trained to design participatory health education activities. It was observed that knowledge about malaria significantly improved both among the school children and the adults in the community which in turn contributed to a decrease in malaria prevalence in the community. The concept has been recommended as a complementary approach in malaria control programs across West Africa.
