Tradition and Modernity:  Philosophical Reflections on the African Experience

Summary of Article , 1997

Gyekye explores the nature of political life in traditional Africa, drawing heavily on the Akan experience. Through this exercise, he presents clear democratic features, which emphasise both political and economic rights of citizens. With this background, he argues for the need for Africans societies of today to borrow and adapt these features where applicable in addition to what might be found desirable from the foreign practice of democracy. He contends that this method might be the source of political salvation for Africa.
